Advice From My Dad

Jim Kaloutas:
I'm Jim Kaloutas. My dad always told me, tell me who you hang out with and I'll tell you who you're going to be. I think my dad didn't like some of my friends, but I turned out okay. During my twenties, I started to listen and some of what he was telling me has lived with me in business. I found myself seeking out other business owners to learn from, local contractors, bankers, insurance agents, and my CPA. In my thirties, I joined the Young Entrepreneurs Organization and the Associated Builders and Contractors Industry Peer Group, that was a mouthful. A lot of my learning and growing as a business owner has come from the shared experiences of these two groups, there is a big difference between the advice and shared experiences.

Jim Kaloutas:
We all have a friend or relative that wants to tell us what to do, I've learned so much from hearing the heartfelt stories of other business owners, challenged with decisions that they've had to make. Being a part of these peer groups, I realized that being a business owner isn't just about business, it was also about my life and my journey. I'm always saying the only reason we do what we do at work is because of what we have at home. Our friends, our family, and our communities. In business, we hear it's lonely at the top, especially during any kind of crisis. Well, it doesn't have to be that way. Having others by your side that are going through what you're going through or better yet have gone through it and can share their story is priceless. So who's in your peer group, where will you go to find people to get shared experiences? Please share this and watch how your peer group will grow.
