Painting Shipping Containers for Whole Foods Market in Hyannis, MA

In case you haven’t heard, ship­ping con­tain­ers are enjoy­ing a whole new lev­el of pop­u­lar­i­ty. Sure, they’ve always been appre­ci­at­ed for their use­ful­ness in the realm of, well, ship­ping, but now they’re being uti­lized in a wide vari­ety of oth­er ways. Many folks are even using them to build cus­tom homes, but that’s a sto­ry for anoth­er post.

We were con­tact­ed recent­ly by Whole Foods Mar­ket in Hyan­nis, MA, because, to put it blunt­ly, they were in a bit of a jam.

The Prob­lem!

Whole Foods pur­chased a num­ber of used ship­ping con­tain­ers with the goal of repur­pos­ing them to be out­door vend­ing struc­tures. This is a great idea!

These con­tain­ers arrived with what should have been a healthy pow­der-coat­ed fin­ish, but unfor­tu­nate­ly the fin­ish had com­plete­ly failed. This meant that not only was it unsight­ly and flak­ing, but the exposed steel had already begun to rust.

On top of that, they need­ed to be ready for oper­a­tion by the fol­low­ing Fri­day, and it was already Tuesday.

The Solu­tion — A Quick Turn­around Time for Com­mer­cial Painting

• We matched the need­ed col­ors, then scraped and pre­pared the sur­faces and wheels of the stor­age container.
• Next, we applied a fan­tas­tic primer: Sher­win Williams Kem Bond HS Uni­ver­sal Met­al Primer (we’ll share a few ben­e­fits of using this prod­uct in just a minute).
• We also tint­ed the primer to a shade of grey (no nov­el or movie jokes, please) to make sure the col­or hold­out was optimized.
• To top things off, we put down two coats of Sher­win-Williams Pro Indus­tri­al Mul­ti-Sur­face Acrylic. This includ­ed the wheels.

The Good News?

We made it with time to spare.

These clev­er­ly repur­posed units were ready to serve cus­tomers before their 7am open­ing on Fri­day. It was very grat­i­fy­ing to see every­one so relieved, pleased, and amazed.

So, back to the primer.

The Sher­win-Williams Kem Bond HS Uni­ver­sal Met­al Primer is a won­der­ful prod­uct. It is incred­i­bly durable, inhibits the devel­op­ment of rust, dries quick­ly, and it’s low-VOC (has very lit­tle odor). Choos­ing a prod­uct that not only looks great but that we know will endure as a bar­ri­er of pro­tec­tion is one of our priorities.
