Installing an ESD Flooring System for a Manufacturer in Cazenovia, NY
We recently completed the large-scale installation of an ESD (electrostatic discharge) flooring system, and we wanted to share the project highlights and photos with you here.
But first, in case you aren’t entirely sure about what this kind of flooring system offers or includes, let’s take a closer at the benefits and features.
What Is ESD Flooring, and Who Needs This Kind of System?
In short, “ESD Flooring” is a specialized flooring option that connects people and mobile equipment to an earth ground, safely carrying electrical charges away rather than allowing them to accumulate and discharge unpredictably.
This is especially crucial in facilities where sensitive equipment is used, or volatile chemicals are present that need to be housed in a completely stable environment. In some cases a discharge of static electricity is not just an inconvenience, but can cause a real catastrophe.
Meeting the Needs of Our Client With a Customized Floor System In Just 5 Days
Picking the perfect industrial flooring system is often like visiting a tailor: your needs are addressed, measurements taken, and the ideal product is put together just for you. Flooring is generally not one-size-fits-all, especially if you have special considerations because of the nature of your operations.
In this case, we were awarded the opportunity to outfit 22,000 sq ft (and more to come) of an 85,000+ sq ft facility with an ESD flooring system. Our client manufactures electro-mechanical switches and control systems, creating the need for a robust ESD control protocol.
Why did our client choose us?
Well, they actually visited a previous installation of ours in Massachusetts and tested the ESD properties. After seeing the results firsthand, they chose us to be their flooring expert.
We began with an initial installation covering 14,000 square feet. The process involved setting up floor-to-ceiling containment, including a negative air environment (we’ll discuss why this was important below).
In case you love the details, here are the specific products that we used:
- Protective Industrial Polymers (PIP) 1200 Water Reducible primer
- 60 Mil Slurry using PIP 3610
- Top-coated the system using PIP ESD 200 High-Wear urethane
- Installed copper grounding tape to earth grounds every 1,000 square feet
Special Considerations During This ESD Flooring Project
Do you remember how we mentioned that containment was a priority? We always work carefully and respectfully, but it was especially important in this case because this facility operates around the clock, seven days a week.
In addition to containment strategies, we also used low-odor products that wouldn’t disrupt those hard at work around us.
In the end, we are happy to report that our client was thrilled with the result, and expressed great relief that everything was finished on-time and perfectly met their needs.
