What Is ESD Floor­ing, and Who Needs This Kind of System?

In short, ​“ESD Floor­ing” is a spe­cial­ized floor­ing option that con­nects peo­ple and mobile equip­ment to an earth ground, safe­ly car­ry­ing elec­tri­cal charges away rather than allow­ing them to accu­mu­late and dis­charge unpredictably.

This is espe­cial­ly cru­cial in facil­i­ties where sen­si­tive equip­ment is used, or volatile chem­i­cals are present that need to be housed in a com­plete­ly sta­ble envi­ron­ment. In some cas­es a dis­charge of sta­t­ic elec­tric­i­ty is not just an incon­ve­nience, but can cause a real catastrophe.

Meet­ing the Needs of Our Client With a Cus­tomized Floor Sys­tem In Just 5 Days

Pick­ing the per­fect indus­tri­al floor­ing sys­tem is often like vis­it­ing a tai­lor: your needs are addressed, mea­sure­ments tak­en, and the ide­al prod­uct is put togeth­er just for you. Floor­ing is gen­er­al­ly not one-size-fits-all, espe­cial­ly if you have spe­cial con­sid­er­a­tions because of the nature of your operations.

In this case, we were award­ed the oppor­tu­ni­ty to out­fit 22,000 sq ft (and more to come) of an 85,000+ sq ft facil­i­ty with an ESD floor­ing sys­tem. Our client man­u­fac­tures elec­tro-mechan­i­cal switch­es and con­trol sys­tems, cre­at­ing the need for a robust ESD con­trol protocol.

Why did our client choose us?

Well, they actu­al­ly vis­it­ed a pre­vi­ous instal­la­tion of ours in Mass­a­chu­setts and test­ed the ESD prop­er­ties. After see­ing the results first­hand, they chose us to be their floor­ing expert.

We began with an ini­tial instal­la­tion cov­er­ing 14,000 square feet. The process involved set­ting up floor-to-ceil­ing con­tain­ment, includ­ing a neg­a­tive air envi­ron­ment (we’ll dis­cuss why this was impor­tant below).

• Pro­tec­tive Indus­tri­al Poly­mers (PIP) 1200 Water Reducible primer
• 60 Mil Slur­ry using PIP 3610
• Top-coat­ed the sys­tem using PIP ESD 200 High-Wear urethane
• Installed cop­per ground­ing tape to earth grounds every 1,000 square feet

In addi­tion to con­tain­ment strate­gies, we also used low-odor prod­ucts that wouldn’t dis­rupt those hard at work around us.
